Physical Description: Tall (6Õ4Ó) and dark, wisps of ghastly otherworldliness drift about the gaunt lines of this man as fog over a midnight swamp. Hazel eyes glint caustically from beneath a thick shroud of sooty lashes, coldly amber snarled by tangles of dying green. His complexion is a hazy pale mocha, lacking the warm luster of sunned bronze. Full black hair is kept short, and thin brows jag angular traces below his smooth forehead. His features are cruelly delicate, beautifully harsh. He has hardly a wrinkle, save the furrows that run from the twisted smile that often dances on thin lips.

While incomparable to the typical, hearty, colonial man, ToddÕs lean frame is not completely without athletic strength. He moves with the feline grace of a predator, a flicker in the shadows as well serves his role of documenter. His dress rarely strays far from black, almost always includes a pair of slacks, and is never sloppy.

Personality: Though externally quiet, ToddÕs somber intensity throbs perceptibly beneath his surface. Passions, both positive and negative, may briefly flare outward but all in all he is a very self-contained individual. It is essential for him to have the freedom to live his own way, by his own code. Todd will not tolerate repression, and will quickly adjourn from any situation that makes him feel caged. Thus is unsurprising that, while he loves the ladies, Todd has always been horrible when it comes to commitment. He hates feeling tied down; while he has sired a number of children, he has never entered a marriage contract.

Capable of being quite charming, Todd has no qualms flattering others if it suits his aims. Alternatively, he may come off as incredibly aloof when his focus turns inward. It is not a matter of pride, and rather is one of function. When dealing with people who canÕt serve an immediate gain, ToddÕs interactions are apt to change on a whim. His promotion of self and personal ideals leads him to be rather unscrupulous, with no remorse about deception as long as it serves his purposes.

Background: In the chaos of war, love blossomed rapidly between the young journalist Violet and lieutenant Lance Pete, who was assigned to escort her during her front-line reporting. The PeteÕs were wed in a simple ceremony, presided over by LanceÕs superior officer. Their romance was fleeting; Violet returned to First after her yearÕs assignment and Lance stayed on to fight the Nathi.

A child of the war, Todd was born on First and was destined to never meet his father. His early life was a combination of long hours at day care and sporadic trips when the energetic Violet dragged him along on her less dangerous assignments. Though this made for some tumultuous scenes, young Todd adored his mom and overall enjoyed the excitement that swirled about their otherwise modest lives. His father was a living legend to him; a man whoÕs voice would echo hollowly in graphic greetings and whose picture was always tucked safely in some satchel or pocket.

Todd was fourteen when his father died, one of the many heroic soldiers lost in the grueling Cygni Space Battle. It was an odd sense of loss for the boy, since truly he had hardly known Lance. Violet seemed to collapse on herself for a while, as if the thought of Lance returning was what had pulled her through all those years and now the string had snapped.

With off and on schooling due to frequent traveling with his mother, Todd had little ambition for himself. As Violet faltered, he found himself stepping up as man of the house. In the final years of the war, though Violet did the actual reporting, her son was the one handling the pairÕs logistics. As the Nathi were routed, Violet found a new cause to live for as she joined in with the early roots of the Pern expedition.

Though old enough to go his own way, Todd felt so integral to his motherÕs life that he signed on to the colony with her. He was twenty-one when he went into deep sleep on the Buenos Aires, heading far away from the fast paced existence that was all he knew. While he had some difficulty finding his place, his mom was swept up in her Ônew beginningÕ. She soon entered into a modified marriage contract with a group of other singles, pooling their land allotments to form a sort of utopian commune. With a new support system in place, suddenly Violet didnÕt rely so heavily on her son. Todd was left to make his own way in his new home.

Without any true skills and too old for schooling, Todd became a rover. HeÕd lend a hand here and there as people set up their stakes, and would ferry items back and forth. Since he had journalistic experience from following his mother around, he sort of fell into that role. Managing to secure a camera for himself, he has been documenting what events he can in the development of Pern. When half of the colony branched north, it was more out of curiosity then lack of faith in the southernersÕ plans that prompted him to migrate.

If it werenÕt for two broken limbs and a near-fatal lingering sickness, Todd would have likely left with one of the groups that set out after the earthquake. As it was, he was barely able to muster the strength to join the trip south. It was his acquaintance Khalil Rami who alerted Todd about the plan to flee Cave Hold. The journalist had hoped to bring what little photo documentation he had of the northern situation, but unfortunately someone had raided his files a few weeks before the trip. Truthful reporting of the bleak and tyrannical situation wasnÕt exactly on the agenda of Malloren or her supporters.

Still stuck in the north are his son Seth and an ex-girlfriend, Lola Thwaite, who had been widowed by the earthquake. It is ToddÕs intention to retrieve them, now that The Return has found the southern holds whole and thriving. The months south have restored him to full health, and he supports Belle MooreÕs planned rescue mission.
