About This Blog

Who runs this webpage?

I’m Ariel Wetzel, a graduate student studying English at University of Washington. Among other things, I’m a gamer, anarchist, mountain biker, feminist, writer, vegan, and activist. I have worked as a teacher, labor organizer, journalist, a grocery checker, and in merchandise at the Magic Kingdom theme park at Walt Disney World.

Can I advertise on your site?

Probably. E-mail me and we’ll talk.

Who else blogs here?

I’ve invited several online and off friends to contribute to the site. My friend Meghann, who attends university with me, was our first to post. Let’s hope the others will pipe in soon.

I can be contacted by E-mail at lakedesire@gmail.com or posthumin on AOL Instant Messanger.

What does the site name mean?

New Game +, or New Game Plus, is an option in games like Chrono Trigger, where you can use your old levels and abilities to replay the game and experience it in a new way. I choose it for its positive sounding game reference.

What is feminism?

I prefer bell hooks’s definition: “feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” If you agree with those goals, then you can consider yourself a feminist.

If you’re new to feminism, try the Wikipedia article to get started.

I’m a man. Do I have to be female to be a feminist or interested in gender and video games?

Not at all. Feminism is for everyone and benefits everyone. Some male allies to women’s issues prefer to call themselves profeminist men to avoid colonising feminism.

Can I help you out with a site contribution?

Send me an E-mail or IM with your idea. I’m especially interested in posting game reviews from contributing readers. I have a lot of ideas for expanding this website, so web development skills are particularly useful since all I know is basic HTML.

Why was my comment deleted?

I have no tolerance for flaming, victim blaming, invalidating or colonizing the voices of others, and hateful language, and may remove such comments to keep this a safe space for readers.

  1. I found this address on a chalk board in one of my college class rooms so I checked it out since it dealt with gaming. I like the name and especially the layout of the template. I regret to say I’m a guy, well maybe I shouldn’t, but I sympathize with the girl gaming community with the treatment they repeatedly get. Good luck with the site!

  3. Munch, what a small world! I’m guessing we go to the same school and you saw the URL I wrote up on the board yesterday in my women’s studies class. (I’m glad you could read my handwriting.) No shame in being a guy; allies are wonderful.

  4. Hey, that is neat that your URL was written up on a board for other students to see. Was it your women’s studies class? Nice way to advertise! Even better that another student took the time to look this up!

  5. Is this the same Liz that plays DDR a bunch?
    If not, then nevermind.

    Comment by Munch — December 2, 2005 @ 3:06 pm

  6. No, this is a different “Liz.” I am Ariel’s mom. I have played DDR with her, but I am really bad at it! Do you like to play it?

  7. I play it a ton, more so than most people, thanks. I am glad people are getting interested in this great game.

Guitar Hero is also another music game that has come out in the US. You play with a guitar instead :)

  11. This is amazing! Thanks Ariel for creating such a needed space for feminist gamers and allies! I especially like the survey you did on WoW, since that is what I play the most. See you in class on Tuesday!

  14. So did you go through all of our Sex and Gender class knowing I’m Lake Desire and not telling me that you were Munch?

  15. I am an 18 year old guy currently involved in a project on linguistics and MMORPGs for my final English Language A level Qualification

As an inteligent feminist gamer I would really appreciate a short discussion with you if you could find the time focusing mostly on the differences between ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ dialogue with regards to the linguistic studies of Lakoff on Language & Gender?

If you have myspace then pelase message me there, or contact me my e-mail at aitai@hotmail.co.uk.

The sooner the better if this is possible as I am seriously approaching deadline and yor site has been so perfect for a perspective and way to set up my presentaton of actual language study n this area that I really would like to speak with you on the topic.

  18. Rimonabant (also known as Zimulti, Acomplia, Slimona or Obitone) is an anorectic anti obesity drug. It is a CB1 cannabinoid receptor antagonist. Rimonabant has been found to stop food craving enough to help people lose weight, and could also help curb other unhealthy urges, such as smoking. http://www.genericacomplia.us
